EXHALANTS: Atonement: LP

Dec 03, 2020

If you ask me, Exhalants, from Austin, are the best current “noise rock” band around. Atonement is an extremely personal and angry record, emotional and real, an aspect of it that clearly sets it apart from its peers. Angrily punishing at one moment, and then “pretty” at the next turn, these new songs really show how the band has progressed since I reviewed their demo in these pages years ago. I hear influence from some of the heaviest hitters of ’90s underground noise rock/punk/indie, like Shellac, Slint, June Of ’44, Unsane, and Unwound, but modernized, often aggressive and always heavy. This record doesn’t sound like any of those bands, but instead sounds like all of them, all at once. Want to hear a modern noise rock band seemingly at the top of their game? Well then, seek this out—you will not regret it. –Mark Twistworthy (Hex, hexrecords.bigcartel.com)
