Elway sounds to me at times of early, Grippe-era Jawbox, and at others like twenty-first century melodic punk. The lyrical content is consistent with that pigeon-holing, as it shimmies towards the thoughtful and introspective. So, that makes this a solid record to me. Yet I wasn’t sure I liked the name for a while—a Fort Collins band calling themselves Elway would be like a band from Manitowoc calling themselves Favre. But then I read that seven years ago John Elway himself asked them to stop using the name, and they issued a wonderfully understated fuck-you to him.
