EDDIE SUBTITLE AND THE ROCKING HORSE PEOPLE: Kaleidoscope Eyes: CD

Dec 03, 2020

Eddie Subtitle goes for a more straightforward non-“punk” feel here, with alternating stabs as folk, blues, ’60s rock, hints of country western and psych, and so on. Covers abound, with staples by the Byrds, Big Mama Thornton, The Fleetwoods, The Beatles, Dee Clark, Elvis Presley, and others getting some action. This could’ve easily gone south quick, but he pulls it off handily, opting for more reverential than piss-take; his backing band is top-notch and he does the songs justice. I’m sure those expecting “No Virgins in Hollywood” or “Child Sin” are gonna whine about how it’s not “vintage” Eddie, but those of us who didn’t skip through “Magic” or “Your Head’s in the Right Place” know what’s here was there all along. –Jimmy Alvarado (Eddie Subtitle, facebook.com/eddiesubtitle)
