DRONEFLOWER: “In the Air Tonight” b/w “More than Words”: 7”

I am going to level with you and let you know that I really like Droneflower but what really made me pre-order this 7” is that it was a special edition available through Newbury Comics and I felt a pang of deep responsibility to my fifteen-year-old self who used to get a ride every Tuesday to the local Newbies to find new music. It was the best! I got that same feeling from buying this 7” and it ruled. The record itself is two covers from this great project of Marissa Nadler and Stephen Brodsky’s. I enjoy their collaboration because I feel like they have a great overlap in the ethereal darkness while also pushing each other’s artistry to new places in the space where they differ. That’s on display here, with the combination of two covers: Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” and Boston hometown heroes Extreme’s “More Than Words.” When I texted two friends about this 7”, both separately noted their appreciation for the recognition of Nuno Bettencourt’s genius. And though I obviously agree, it’s a bit of a bummer that they went without the more complex guitar picking for this echoey acoustic remake. Overall though, this cover gets at the sweetness of the song. –Theresa W. (Sacred Bones)
