DOWN BY LAW: Lonely Town: LP

May 25, 2021

New record that shows that the band still has the magic touch when it comes to writing memorable songs. The title track seems like a strange concoction of The Police meets Fugazi, but it works. Sam Williams III does double duty by handling bass guitar on the album and does not seem to be the worse for wear. Dave Smalley’s lyrics question life and everyone’s place in it. If you have ever felt alone—well, these songs may lessen the blow. “Darkest Sun” moves with a reckless pace while “Go Back Home” offers up life lessons on how to survive in this world. I will not even ruin the surprise of who drops in with some guest vocals on that song! It all comes to an end with a bouncy romp on a Herman’s Hermits cover. Thankfully, it is not “I’m Henry the Eighth, I Am.” Fierce. –Sean Koepenick (Kung Fu)
