DEX ROMWEBER: Good Thing Goin’: CD

Jul 21, 2023

That first Flat Duo Jets album was definitely a thing for a minute or two back in the mid-’80s. I can’t say I really kept up with the comings and goings of the pair over the interceding decades, but if this album is any indicator, I needn’t have bothered: This is really kinda bad. At the high points, this sounds like a tape an aspiring songwriter made of songs that they want to convince the Reigning Sound to record some day; at the low points—which are numerous—this takes a weird turn into lounge balladry, a genre which Mr. Romweber lacks the vocal panache to finagle. The pedestrian cover of the oft-covered Yardbirds hit “Shape of Things to Come” that brings nothing new to the table is merely lackluster; the completely unironic take on “Tell Laura I Love Her”—among the very worst of the 1960 teen death songs—is grounds for dismissal. More Flat than Jet these days I’m afraid. BEST SONG: “Comin’ Home.” BEST SONG TITLE: “Twine Time.” FANTASTIC AMAZING TRIVIA FACT: No, I haven’t seen a record cover depicting the artist signing autographs in quite a while either, thanks. –Rev.
