DEGURUTIENI: Dark Mondo: CD

Mar 17, 2021

From Osaka, Japan, Alco Degurutieni undeniably takes some influence from Tom Waits (especially in the vocals), but the musical instrumentation here is really all over the map. There is an underlying ’60s exotica feel to this record which mixes some other cinematic-sounding moments that easily sounds like it could be the score to a movie set in the French Quarter in New Orleans… odd, kind of mysterious, and dark. The use of toy instruments and the noted involvement of members from the Japanese weirdo band Acid Mothers Temple aligns perfectly with the overall vibe. File this under “uneasy listening for oddballs” in your record collection. –Mark Twistworthy (Voodoo Rhythm, voodoorhythm.com)
