This photo was shot in 2018 at a Sunday afternoon show at Cafe Nela. I’ve seen The Urinals/100 Flowers play many times over the years, but this show was exceptional. They played an extra-long set, and they were really on their game that afternoon. A super-tight set. They played a mix of Urinals and 100 Flowers songs: “Sex,” “California’s Falling into the Ocean,” “All Sexed Up,” “12xU,” “Strip Club,” and a haunting version of “Let a Little Dark into Your Heart.”

This was the special thing I miss about Cafe Nela: hanging around DTLA on Sundays with my friends, then around 5:00 PM, I’d hit Cafe Nela, have some cold beers and catch afternoon punk shows like this one. Sundays at Nela was always the perfect way to wrap up a great weekend.

If you don’t own any Urinals vinyl, I highly suggest you pick up their compilation LP Negative Capability on In The Red Records. Everything you need is on this double-album set. And after you burn through that album, you can pick up the 100 Flowers reissues and check out their post-punk material (recorded after 1980).
