This past weekend I caught The Groans at The Smell, and as always, they put on a great set. It was obvious that they’d just returned from being on tour, because their set was real tight.
The band gifted me a copy of their new CD, and I’ve been listening to it a lot over the past two days. I’m really digging it. The songs are strong, and the production/engineering is very impressive. The recording has that heavy, raw, warm-distorted sound that I always appreciate. The instruments and vocals are balanced perfectly on the album. Great production on this one.
I hear influences of Team Dresch, a touch of The Breeders, and some Sonic Youth. The contrasting/intertwining vocals swirling around the album gives the songs a stirring, conspicuous streak throughout the album. I like this record a lot. Check it out on Bandcamp.
