When I first heard about the forming of this supergroup and the release of their self-titled debut album, I was intrigued. Crystal Fairy is made up of Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover from the Melvins, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez from At the Drive-In and the Mars Volta, and has Terri Gender Bender from Le Butcherettes on vocals. How could I not be excited? Each one of those very talented people has done something that I am a fan of, especially Buzz and Dale of the Melvins, whose thirty-four years and more than twenty albums worth of music have been so important to me and countless other fans of their ventures into punk rock and doom-stoner-sludge metal. Certainly, Crystal Fairy must be at least as good as the sum of their parts, right? Wrong. On paper, Crystal Fairy should be creating fuzzy, psychedelic, garage punk masterpieces. But the end result, sadly, feels much less inspired and much more ‘90s rock revival with cookie cutter songs and predictable guitar solos. Sadly, I am not a fan. Now, where is my copy of Stoner Witch? –Jon Mule (Ipecac, ipecac.com)
