The Thermals broke up, but this new band is filling the indie pop void they left in my house. Come Closer qualifies as a supergroup, featuring J. Wang and Davey Quinn of Dan Padilla and Tiltwheel, along with Chris Prescott of Pinback, No Knife, and Rocket From The Crypt. Because it’s a Pirates Press release, Pretty Garbage is available in a few different colored vinyl variants. There’s also a flashy flexi available for “High Life,” one of many hook-filled tracks on the album. In addition to the lyric sheet, there’s an accompanying twenty-eight-page zine by J. Wang entitled The Story of Come Closer’s Pretty Garbage. The zine is well worth reading, as it provides insight into a complex artistic evolution, culminating in the homegrown recording process that resulted in this diamond in the rough. –Art Ettinger (Pirates Press)
