The previous releases from this Portland, Ore. trio have been great—don’t get me wrong—with shards of shrill guitar careening off, over, and through the rhythm section’s urgent, hip-shaking lines. Here, though, they’ve really outdone themselves. Part of the excellence comes from the production, which still taps into the established web of post-punk signifiers but is fuller this time around. The other part is that the band sounds more confident, more in tune with their anger, less prim and proper. The best kind of single here: one that leaves the listener hankering for more. Collate rules, okay? –Michael T. Fournier (Domestic Departure, domesticdeparturerecords.com)
