COLLATE: Generative Systems: LP

Nov 20, 2023

Second long player from this Portland, Ore. trio. Political in the same say the Minutemen were (and I’m not just saying that because they have a song called “The Product”): bass, drums, and guitar each claim their own sonic fiefdoms in the mix, letting each band member be easily heard. Basslines lope into unexpected phrases as trebly guitar bleats and scrapes over the din of drums that crash and thump in equal measures. Vocal duties are shared by bassist Erika and guitarist Jason, with the balance a little more heavily skewed towards the former than on previous releases. Off-kilter and jagged in all the best ways, but with an obvious, honest personality that bleeds easily through and distinguishes them as purveyors of some of the best post-punk-influenced stuff out there. –Michael T. Fournier (Domestic Departure)
