Churchwood is the type of band that I can appreciate from afar, but I don’t think I would ever find myself listening to them. There’s a lot of variation on this record, but when the dust settles it’s largely a rockin’ blues record that kind of sounds like Tom Waits fronting a blues rock bar band. The performances are solid but I’ve never been much of a Tom Waits fan myself, so a guy who kind of sounds like swampy Tom Waits doesn’t do much for me either. An impressive Austin garage/punk/rock lineage including members who have spent time in Poison 13 and The Crackpipes got my attention, but sadly it doesn’t quite deliver. –Mark Twistworthy (Saustex, saustexmedia.com)
