Going to see the Mountain Goats is like a religious experience for me. They’re a band I hold close to my heart whose live show brings me comfort and excitement. The singer, John Darnielle, is almost a mythical figure in my mind. I hang on every word and every lyric during their sets. The choice of songs and rants seem to change every night, which makes every show quite unique. I have little expectation for specific songs or even how songs are played. Since adding a fourth Mountain Goat (Matt Douglas), the compositions of even classic TMG songs are now ever-evolving in a beautiful way. It’s lovely to see twenty-plus-year-old songs have new life breathed into them. At their recent Seattle show, TMG did a full band version of the originally acoustic/lo-fi song “Pink and Blue” off of All Hail West Texas which completely changed the tone of the classic. This kind of evolution makes an old band like The Mountain Goats feel new and exciting.
