Chris Boarts Larson Photo Column—Lebenden Toten

Dec 10, 2022

Lebenden Toten rocked outta Portland. Screeching guitar feedback, pummeling and chaotic d-beats, breathless vocals. This is lo-fi noise with stylistic intention that plays homage to and draws from Japanese hardcore bands like Confuse. This isn’t a band I’d listen to comfortably at home or driving, yet when playing live in front of me the energy and utterly raw punkness of it all pulls me totally in. Although they’ve had many releases, they’re all limited and hard to find. This is raw punk and it will make your ears bleed.

I’ve remembered this punk-as-fuck show fondly and dug into a bunch of photos from when Lebenden Toten played with Parasytic, Male Nurses, Syndrome, and Vivisect here in Richmond. This photo was always a favorite of mine, with that hot guitar and the vocalist floating.
