Chris Boarts Larson Photo Column—Best Friends Day, August 17, 2004
Best Friends Day started out as a birthday celebration party of friends and turned into one of the biggest and most anticipated punk fests in the region. Once upon a time, Hadad’s was just a local family-run water park with a manmade lake, rope jumps, water slides, with huge inflatables in a big pool area. You could bring your own food and beer. And your kids. It sounds unreal, right? Well, it was.
Enter the Best Friends Day contingent at Hadad’s and suddenly there is a punk show at a water park that is very DIY, super rad, and totally unbelievable. As fests go, BFD got bigger each year and spanned a weekend with multiple shows and huge national acts. Needless to say, at some point the bring your own food and beer part stopped, but the fun did not.
In 2004, this was the pile of bikes outside the show at Alley Katz show with Baroness, RAMBO and Witchunt. The sign on the bike pile is promoting a mass bike ride the next morning for the all-dayer at Hadad’s. I only wish I had a photo of the punx on bikes riding down Hwy 5.
