CERTAIN SMILE, A: Self-titled: CD

Portland, Ore. is a hell of a city for many reasons, but most notably the amount of art it churns out. These city kids churn out a well-done indie rock disc, and by indie rock, I mean classic indie rock, e.g.: college rock, Sebadoh, Pavement. The band seems to have the term “dream pop” thrown at them a lot, but it isn’t where I’d slot them, as dream pop seems to be more electric, and A Certain Smile is fairly made up of organic instruments—somewhere between Dinosaur Jr. and Alvvays. –Steve Adamyk (acertainsmile.bandcamp.com)
