For over twenty-five years, Broken Pencil has been “The Magazine of Zine Culture and the Independent Arts” in Canada and beyond. In its latest issue, Broken Pencil continues its decades-long mission of reporting in-depth on zine and DIY culture, filling sixty-four pages with zine and book reviews, features (on the DC Punk Archive, the recently revived ZineWiki, and Montreal cartoonist Valium, who died last September), and more. A sizable chunk of Issue 94 is dedicated to winners of Broken Pencil’s Zine Awards, given for Zine of the Year & Best Litzine, Best Infozine, Best Comic Zine, Best Fanzine, Best Group Zine, Best Perzine, Best Quaranzine, and Best Political Zine. The overall theme of the issue is food, so there’s plenty of food zine content, including mouth-watering pictorials. This issue of Broken Pencil is also Jonathan Valelly’s last as editor. JV did a fantastic job heading this magazine for people who love zines. –Gina Murrell (Broken Pencil, PO Box 203, Station P, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 2S7, Canada)
