BLOOD OF GODS #2, $5, 5½” x 10”, color newsprint, 38 pgs.

After reading and reviewing zines for twenty-plus years, I begin to think “I’ve seen it all!” But then a zine like Blood of Gods comes along and I’m forced to reconsider. This beautifully illustrated zine is all about heavy metal (and its subgenres) and wine. For real. And while it’s a cool idea, the thing that impressed me most is that the zine is actually done well. Really well. First, the illustrations are very metal and utilize skulls and wine. They’re like something you might find when a metal band decides to splurge on their album art budget. Second, the content is quite varied. There are wine reviews, music reviews, and interviews with musicians and winemakers about wine. Blood of Gods also has wine reviews by musicians and a section where metal bands are paired with different wines, which is really creative. And if all of that isn’t enough to entice you, any net proceeds from Blood of Gods are donated to Blue Mountain Humane Society, so you’re supporting a good cause by buying this zine. Drink up! –Kurt Morris ([email protected])
