BLIND SHAKE, THE: Celebrate Your Worth: LP

Jan 18, 2017

The Blind Shake is weirdo garage punk outfit from Minneapolis. The extra chromosome of psychedelia ensures that every song is a bit off-kilter—just enough to make your brain itch. This bass-less trio’s snarling, reverb-drenched jams often recall a Rick Froberg/John Reis collaboration, especially on “Apostle Island” and “Reasonable World.” This is rock’n’roll for degenerates, where lyrics seem to be the product of the cut-up method: “Flavonoids fill the void / Giant girls, lazy boys / Just figure it out.” The Blind Shake’s audacity (and insanity) keeps me on the edge of my seat. Plus, “Corpse on the Roof” may be the most rollicking song I’ve heard in a long time; the intro riff gives me goosebumps. –Sean Arenas (Goner, goner-records.com)
