BILLY BATTS & THE MADE MEN: Life Is Short Life Is Shit and Soon It Will Be Over: 7” EP

Damn, this band is surprisingly great. I say surprisingly because a lot of the stuff I get to review is mediocre at best. Then I come to find out that the members of this band are all under twenty years old—the drummer being a mere fifteen! And he fucking rips on the kit. They play fast paced, frenetic hardcore in the vein of Government Issue, Bad Brains, and some Naked Raygun vibes. It seems that Joe King (The Queers) has taken a shine to them and will be producing their upcoming full length. I personally have no love for Joe after he backed Darren Wilson, the cop who murdered Michael Brown. He also has repeatedly called Brown a “thug” which is coded, racist language. But I digress. It seems unfair to condemn such a young band because of who they choose to work with, so I’ll just say that the music is good enough to succeed on their own without a “big name” in pop punk attached to them. The world is their oyster and I hope they can charge ahead on their own merits. It’s just kind of a busted star to hitch your wagon to in my opinion. Also worth mentioning is they have a decent cover of X-Ray Spex’s “Oh Bondage, Up Yours!” I feel it’s such a common cover, and I wish bands would write their own pro-feminism scorchers instead of regurgitating the words of Poly Styrene. Also, please credit the female singer on that track. Their name is nowhere to be found. The cover art is real strange, but again, the tunes are strong enough to stand on their own. –Kayla Greet (Geared Four)
