BENNÎ: “Diamond Man” b/w “Heavy Metals”: 7”

May 25, 2021

I’m sure that when you, like me, see a record sleeve depicting a big, burly, tattooed dude with facial hair wearing chain mail on his head and singing songs with titles like “Heavy Metals” and “Diamond Man,” you, like me, automatically assume the record is going to sound like techno-y synth-pop à la a marginally more evil version of the Silicon Teens, so I won’t even bother to bring it up. Not sure why I even mentioned it, really. Briefly dispensing with the ungovernable facetiousness (if I may), I’m not so sure I can really root out any legitimate savagery here—but, all the same, these sounds are actually far more welcome than the plodding thud-rock I had imagined this record held in store. And, what the heck, “Heavy Metals” is almost as cool as “Sun Flight,” so rock on wit’ yo’ bad self! Death to false techno-y synth-pop! BEST SONG AND SONG TITLE: “Heavy Metals.” FANTASTIC AMAZING TRIVIA FACT: My buddy has a cat named “Benny,” but I determined this is not Benny the cat’s work because he spells his name differently. –Rev.
