ARNO DE CEA & THE CLOCKWORK WIZARDS: Retrofuturisme 1 & 2: CD

Jul 20, 2022

I listen to all kinds of different stuff, but I don’t think anything could have prepared me for Arno De Cea & The Clockwork Wizards. A French trio together since 2008, the group is pioneering a new subgenre called brutal surf, fusing surf music with electronica and other genres. Dick Dale this is not! Retrofuturisme 1 & 2 is a mostly instrumental double album highlighting the full spectrum of the band’s sound. Tracks like “Rupture Continuum Espace-Temps” are the closest to what I’d think of as traditional surf rock, with lots of reverb and some added effects. “Et Vint La Nuit” takes things in a much darker direction. What starts out as a surf rock song takes a turn about two minutes in into a doom metal epic even the grizzliest of metalheads would enjoy. The CD includes a bonus track from the U.S. release of Retrofutrisme 2, “The Song That Wouldn’t Die,” that’s not found on the European version. I’m going to be rocking out to this for quite a while before digging into the band’s other albums, and I’d encourage anyone looking for something wildly different to check this out. –Paul J.
