The Shopping Cart Project: A Photo Essay by Dan Monick

When I moved to Los Angeles about a year ago, I noticed a ridiculous amount of abandoned shopping carts on the street.

In every neighborhood, it seemed like there was a cart on at least every block.

It kind of started to freak me out.

Then, I started to look at them like skeletal robotic remains. Kind of like pets. For some reason, that made me less uncomfortable.

As I started to make pictures of them I noticed a lot of mattresses and busted down basketball hoops.

Huh.
