SULTAN BATHERY: Self-titled: CD/LP

May 21, 2014

First of all, if there were awards for the best cover art, this band would win all the trophies. It also does a very important job: it gives you a good clue about what the music might sound like. Sometimes cover art is misleading (or doesn’t give you a lot to go on), but this is loud and clear about being some trippy, druggy rock. On garage fuzz, this album delivers. The vocals remind me of early Black Sabbath. I think that most of these songs would be a good soundtrack to a movie set in late-’60s England about a ragtag group of long-haired screw-ups who are plotting to rob a bank.
