The idea is simple. Hold a music festival where the bullshit’s kept to a minimum. No dealings with managers, no big company sponsorships. Fair dealings with bands. Have a fun-ass weekend with the extended DIY punk family.
Nine of us got together to organize AwesomeFest 5. It’s been a year-round endeavor. We’re stoked how it shaped up. It’s diverse—reflecting everyone’s individual tastes, but with heart. We picked bands that are more than “just bands,” folks who work to build something meaningful out of all of these imperfect parts, folks who do as much “doing” as others spend time “thinking about doing” or “theorizing what’s the problem on the internet.” And that’s a world of difference.
Daryl, Kyle, Adam, and I sat down, chewed the fat, drank some beers and wine coolers, and played a handful of songs from the sixty-five bands that are making their way down to San Diego this coming Labor Day weekend.
