MUNCIE GIRLS / THE GREAT CYNICS: Split: 12”

Jun 13, 2014

Here you have two of the U.K.’s leading lights in terms of the indie punk scene. The three Muncie Girls tracks are easily the best sounding recordings the band has released. “Everyday” is my clear favorite with its easygoing catchiness and simplicity. It’s a band that you’d never call boisterous but, hell, the songs are a great tonic for whatever ails you as they soothe and caress with a tenderness that is always welcome. Great Cynics is a band I took some time to acclimatize myself to but am now firmly on board these days. Although Giles Bidder’s vocals are distinctive and enjoyable, the highlight for me is when bassist Iona Cairns takes centre stage on “Scarier Area,” which is the stand out track on the record.
