MORGENMUFFEL #18: 8 ¼” x 5 ¾”, photocopied, $3, 24 pgs.

Nov 24, 2010

This was my first exposure to Morgenmuffel zine and I have to say up front—I’m a fan. Written, drawn, and produced by Isy Morgenmuffel, the zine is subtitled “Cartoons & Rants” and is exactly that and then some. Morgenmuffel is an autobiographical affair that documents Isy’s anarchic, vegan life in and around Brighton, England. This issue includes a visit to a French zine festival, traveling to Denmark for the U.N. climate talks, lots of cooking for the masses, a trip to Finland, and a great recipe for Falafel. Isy’s comics are top notch—she has a shading and crosshatching style that is absent in too many DIY comics and I giggled more than a few times at the smartly-worded dialog. I am already looking forward to issue 19. –Garrett Barnwell (Isy Morgenmuffel, PO Box 74, Brighton BN1, 4ZQ, UK)
