With the current photographic exhibitions in Los Angeles of the great Robert Mapplethorpe, I thought it appropriate for this photo column to once again feature the even greater Patti Smith. If you haven’t read Just Kids, Smith’s memoir of her life in New York City with Mapplethorpe, please do so! It is brilliant! By 1978 both Smith and Mapplethorpe had gone on with their individual careers. I captured Smith here promoting her third album, Easter. It was in the parking lot of Licorice Pizza Records on the Sunset Strip. She performed a short set. I’ll never forget this intimate show. As she said in the album: “I’m an American Artist!” One of the greatest!
