Earlier this year I had an incredible opportunity to make the long drive up to Montreal with some Richmond, Va. friends who were playing Pouzza Fest. Pouzza is a similar idea to The Fest and South By Southwest, with tons of great bands playing at multiple venues throughout downtown. I love festivals like this because you get to enjoy so much amazing music in the span of a couple days and also because you really get to know a city that is not your own.
I was invited along to take some photos throughout the weekend and this gave me the chance to finally catch a band I am always excited about, Brutal Youth. These folks left an impression on me the first time I saw them play a few years ago in a small DIY space in Virginia Beach. Sadly, I have only been able to see them once or twice since. Their performance is rambunctious and energetic. In addition to making some intense facial expressions—often with eyes bulging wide and repeatedly smashing the microphone into his face—Brutal Youth’s vocalist Patty is always offering up the perfect visuals for their aggressive, melodic punk sound.
