Sometimes I think that pop punk as a subgenre is limited by its very nature and, as such, I am usually not overwhelmed when I come in contact with it. That said, I am pleased as punch to hear that Hospital Job brings something a bit different to the party on The Believer. That something different would happen at about the middle of the CD when the band tosses aside the pop punk playbook and throws in some key/synths and/or sequencers on a couple of tracks. And you know what? Not only do they work, but those two songs (“The Scrivener” and “The Believer”) might be the best tracks on the disc. Well done, fellas. Thanks for not following the script.
