Sweden has been the veritable witch’s brew for black metal, but in their latest release, this quartet bridges the gap between ‘90s-era alt rock and metal. With soaring vocals as pretty as Steve Perry that turn on a dime to screamo indictments and double kick drums, this latest full length veers toward emo outfits Glassjaw and Thursday. Gone are the crusty, d-beat percussions and melodies found in previous records such as In the Beginning. A wee anemic for those holding out for more thrashy, anthemic cuts, but worth a listen. Marcus’s pipes are a rarity in metal. –Kristen K.
