ESCAPIST ARTIST, THE #23: $2, 5½” x 8½”, copied, 16 pgs.

Feb 01, 2016

This is a fanzine in the truest sense, a jumble of enthusiastic interviews and grainy xeroxed photos. The twist is that the subjects are not the usual punk bands or whoever, but artist Sophie McMahan and, of all people, Dave Attell. The interview questions are pretty surface-level, the usual hobbies/origins/inspirations routine, so it’s difficult to really get into the content if you’re not already a fan. But Jolie Ruin’s unpretentiousness makes her voice naturally likable, so I don’t really mind. It doesn’t seem like a lot went into the organization and layout, but this writer’s approach seems to be more of the get-in-and-get-out information-dump variety. What you see is what you get, and then it’s over. –Indiana Laub (The Escapist Artist Zine, 625 West Division St., Union City, IN 47390)
