CULTURE KIDS: Self-titled: LP

Jul 24, 2012

As much as I like things like hardcore punk to expand and push the envelope, it seldom happens. I do appreciate and get off on bands playing it straight and to the point. Culture Kids aren’t redesigning the wheel by any stretch, but they do rip it up, and that’s all that really matters in the end. This is straight, no-frills hardcore punk that sounds straight out of the halcyon days of the early ‘80s, yet, at the same time, this stuff sounds fresh and like no one else around. The guitars are fuzzy and scratchy, the amps sound like coffee cans, the bass is a low end burble, while the drums are shaky and rattly. Sounds like the whole thing is about to fall apart, which means this is executed with perfection. The urgency is in the red, and it’s convincing, to say the least.
