ANARCHITEX: Digital Dark Age: LP

Jul 20, 2022

Anarchitex are inventive and pissed off and, best of all, old. They rip up and reconfigure ’80s hardcore and Jesus Lizard-eque post-hardcore and combine it with the satirical, biting lyrical approach of Jello Biafra, and the results are often killer (“Blank Wall,” “CaCa Convention”). They can also be exhausting. Vocalist John Reen Davis has a kind of flat yell, giving the songs an intensity that lacks flavor. And the production is clean and indifferent, turning an album that burns and erupts into something mid-tier, another collection of riffs and grievances. There’s something here, for sure, but is it too much or not enough? –Matt Werts (Mad Butcher, madbutcher.de)
