If ya like watching bands with a frontperson who seems like they could lose their minds at any moment, then I’ve got the perfect band for you. Viagra Boys from Stockholm, Sweden have a mysterious blend of post-punk sound, lyrics that imply a bleak present as well as future, and frontman Sebastian Murphy who seems to be half in this world and half in another dimension. Whether you see Viagra Boys live or in their numerous music videos and performances, Sebastian is beyond an enigma that leaves me in a quandary as to whether it’s all for show or if I’m witnessing a descent into madness. I hope it’s not the latter. Either way, the music and performance are compelling as hell.

Sebastian Murphy has an incredible ability to lull you into a very comfortable place at his show. The crowd seems to get crazier and crazier the more Seabass sinks into the beer-soaked stage for a slop-around. No jumping, no climbing, and the sunglasses stay on for almost the entirety of the show, so when Sebastian leapt into the arms of the crowd and sloshed from one end to the other in the pool of flesh, I pushed and squeezed myself in a position to blast the harsh “against the rules” flash into the shades that seemed to be screwed onto his face.

The Echo, in my experience, had traditionally been a venue which brought out the trendiest of hipsters and was well known for its motionless crowds, but lately a new breed of young, blood-thirsty hooligans has emerged and really saved this venue. The disco ball in the background always brings a smile to my face. I imagine the Viagra Boys used to listen to a fuck-ton of ABBA growing up. Look out for the Viagra Boys vs. ABBA songs coming soon. Mamma Mia, here I go again!
